Herb Bishop created Squirt in Phoenix, Arizona in 1938. It was based on a regionally popular non-carbonated soft drink, called Citrus Club. His creation used less sugar and less fruit juice. According to WPIX New York news announcer Larry Mendte, black cherry Wishniak sodas originated in the 1950s with Philadelphia’s Frank’s Beverages. A Wishniak is a cordial, made in Russia and Eastern Europe, that consists of sugar, cherries and vodka. When Frank’s Beverages was looking for new flavors, they came up with a new soda that reminded company president Mulford Frank of the alcoholic beverage. Matt Brewing Company was founded in 1888 and they are celebrating 125 years as a company. F.X. Matt started the brewery, which began to produce soft drinks during prohibition, like many breweries did. Henry Weinhard was born in Germany in 1830, where he began his career as a brewer, before immigrating to the U.S. in 1851. Though he immigrated to New York, he placed his strongest roots in Oregon, where he began the company that is now known as Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company. John Noel Nichols created Vimto in 1908. It features a mix of carbonated water and sugar with fruit juices like grapes, raspberries and blackcurrants. When iVolkswagen requested it, it was described as a mixed fruit soda.
