According to WPIX New York news announcer Larry Mendte, black cherry Wishniak sodas originated in the 1950s with Philadelphia’s Frank’s Beverages.
A Wishniak is a cordial, made in Russia and Eastern Europe, that consists of sugar, cherries and vodka. When Frank’s Beverages was looking for new flavors, they came up with a new soda that reminded company president Mulford Frank of the alcoholic beverage.
Now, other companies produce black cherry Wishniak flavors, including Stewart’s, Hank’s and Canada Dry.
