Soda Tasting

Wink Review (Soda Tasting #84)

Wink, introduced in the 1960s by Canada Dry, was once marketed as “The Sassy One.” The ingredients are interesting: it has 2% fruit juice (apple, grapefruit and orange juice concentrate) and includes both high fructose corn syrup and sugar.

Have you ever had Wink? Please let me know in the comments.

  1. I like wink even much better as a part of a sherbet float try it you’ll love it on a hot summer night.

  2. I had Wink growing up and haven’t seen it anywhere for at least 10 or so years. (I live in the carribean now and prior to that Northern California for 8 or so years) I read that the removed the ruby grapefruit flavor profile. I’m not sure why they would change the formula since the flavor was very unique and addictive. My Dad used this as a mixer growing up but my siblings and I loved it just as is. I have bought Mello Yellow & Squirt trying to get my “fix” but those don’t even come close to how great Wink was. You can order it on Amazon now but @ $16 for 2, 1ltr bottles PLUS shipping, it doesn’t come cheap.

  3. I just bought this on a trip to NC, as I had never heard of it before. After trying it I looked up your review via google and found that I had agreed with you. Grapefruit soda’s are a favorite of mine, and I would like to encourage you to do a taste test on them because I do not see many reviews of these sodas (I presume you are not a huge fan?). San Pellegrino makes a great one called Pompelmo and another one called Aranciata Rossa which is a blood orange flavored soda. I would encourage you to try them. Thank you for all the work that you do.

    • Rob,

Where in NC did you buy Wink? I have a relative in NC but they haven’t seen it where they are. (Near Asheville) I realllly would love for them to send me some, please help me. :)

    • Thanks for the comment, Rob. That’s cool that you found some. With the products I review on this show, I try to keep it to those which would generally be considered sodas. Often what I do is I look at how the company presents it. If they want us to look at it like a soda, I will. If they don’t, I won’t. They market the line as sparkling fruit beverages, sparkling water, etc. I generally try to avoid sparking fruit drinks, sparkling waters, seltzers, etc. At this time, anyway. But I’ll keep this in mind and I appreciate the kind words.

If you have any other grapefruit sodas that you like, please don’t hesitate to mention them, as well. :)

      Thanks again,

      Patrick

      • Thank you for your reply and thorough explanation. I never really considered the distinctions between the two but your criteria makes a lot of sense.

      • Oh and I forgot to mention the sodas. I do not drink a lot of soda, but some of the ones that come to my mind that could fit your criteria include Fresca, Ting, Squirt (two varieties of which I have seen), Goya, Kiss, and Jarritos. Kiss is something I found in a Chinese grocery store and I haven’t run into it since except online; the rest I see on a regular basis. However there are probably many more I am forgetting.

        • Thanks for the great list, Rob. I’ll see if I can piece together a blind tasting featuring some of those. I know I can get Fresca (maybe Mexican and the U.S. one, I think I’d like to do the Mexican one in the blind, since it is sugar sweetened), Squirt, Wink and Jarritos. I have not seen the rest. But, those 4 would make a good blind tasting probably. :)

  4. Hell again Patrick,

I just found out that Canada Dry will no longer be producing Wink so I put together a fan page on Facebook if you would like to join/check it out. If you could share if with your followers, that would be, of course, awesome. If not, no worries.

    Cheers, Karen

    • Thanks for the comment, Karen. How did you find out that they were no longer producing it?

      Patrick

  5. I wrote them to ask if they were planning to widen their distribution (it’s been in only a few states for at least 15 yrs or so) and they responded that it is being discontinued.
