Dad’s Root Beer was created in the 1930s by Barney Berns and Ely Klapman in Klapman’s Chicago-area home. When they filed for a trademark in September of 1938, they alleged that it had been in use since February of 1937, so this is considered to be the official starting date of Dad’s.
The Berns and Klapman families sold their shares to IC Industries in the 1970s, who sold Dad’s to The Monarch Beverage Company of Atlanta in 1986. At that point, Dad’s was distributed by Coca-Cola and was the second biggest root beer in the U.S., behind only A&W, selling 12 million cases annually. In 2007, Monarch sold Dad’s, Bubble Up, Dr. Wells and Sun Crest to Hedinger Brands, who then licensed the brands to The Dad’s Root Beer Company, which was formed by Hedinger.
The show is growing and I’m pondering how to support the continued investment of time, resources and money. As a viewer of Soda Tasting, what opportunities could I offer you, tied to the show, that you would be willing to pay for? Please let me know in the comments.
